Updated Project Proposal

Nick Koss
GIS Proposal
10/21/10

Introduction:
Saratoga National Historical Park (SNHP) was once the site of a historic battlefield and a strategic site during the revolutionary war. Today SNHP offers a battlefield tour and has many historical sites of interest. SNHP today has a thriving amphibious community which goes unrecognized by the general public. Dr. Woolbright for Siena and Mr. Martin for SNHP have an existing four year partnership which has allowed Woodfrogs to be tracked using Radio transmitters at this historical site. The study of this data has many layers including Sex of the frog, and 3 different pond locations across the site.
Objectives:
The locations of these frogs have been monitored using GPS Tracking allowing us to map where each specific frog has traveled. Some of the questions we want the data to answer is listed below.
• Do frogs from the same pond go to the same summer range?
• Is there a difference in dispersal patterns between the sexes?
• Is there a difference in behavior among years?
• Does land cover influence the path of travel?
Methodology:
This GIS Assignment will require many different techniques to create a map suitable to Dr. Woolbrights and Mr. Martins needs. Inputting The GPS data from the Woodfrogs will require the use of Arc Map, Google Maps, and possibly Google Earth. The Final map created on Arc Map will be based off of aerial Imaging from the National Parks Service (NPS) with GPS data added from 70 frogs. The time frame of this data will also be important to note as some frogs were tracked more persistently than others throughout the Spring, summer, and fall.

Data Sources:

 All GPS data will be provided by Dr. Woolbright
 Aerial Photos will be provided by NPS
 Satellite imaging from Google Maps may or may not be required
