1st draft of project proposal

Nick Koss
GIS Proposal
10/13/10

Introduction:
Saratoga National Historical Park (SNHP) was once the site of a historic battlefield and a strategic site during the revolutionary war. Today SNHP offers a battlefield tour and has many historical sites of interest. SNHP today has a thriving amphibious community which goes unrecognized by the general public. Dr. Woolbright for Siena and Mr. Martin for SNHP have an existing four year partnership which has allowed Woodfrogs to be tracked using Radio transmitters at this historical site. The study of this data has many layers including Sex of the frog, and 3 different pond locations across the site.
Objectives:
The locations of these frogs have been monitored using GPS Tracking allowing us to map where each specific frog has traveled.
Ø  Input all the Data onto a map of SNHP using Arc Map
Ø  Differentiate the sex of the frogs
Ø  Make the model friendly to identifying travel patterns of each frog
Ø  Input the land cover into Arc Map to make it identifiable if land cover has an influence on the frogs movements
Methodology:
This GIS Assignment will require many different techniques to create a map suitable to Dr. Woolbrights and Mr. Martins needs.  Inputting The GPS data from the Woodfrogs will require the use of Arc Map, Google Maps, and possibly Google Earth.  The Final map created on Arc Map will be based off of aerial Imaging from the National Parks Service (NPS) with GPS data added from 70 frogs. The time frame of this data will also be important to note as some frogs were tracked more persistently than others throughout the Spring, summer, and fall.

Data Sources:

Ø  All GPS data will be provided by Dr. Woolbright
Ø  Aerial Photos will be provided by NPS
Ø  Satellite imaging from Google Maps may or may not be required

Work Plan:

Ø  10/13- 1st draft due
Ø  10/20- 1st blog post due, and meet w/ Dr. Woolbright
Ø  10/27-2nd blog post due
Ø  11/3- 3rd blog post due, and comment on other blog posts
Ø  11/10-4th blog post due, and comment on all posts

  1. Nick,

This looks good. I do have a couple of suggestions/questions -

Can you be more specific in your 10/27-12/1 work plan? What do you plan to accomplish for each of these blog posts?

Your methodology should also include formatting the raw data so that it can be entered into ArcGIS.

    Best,
    Prof. M
